Wow. I’ve written a number of posts about how medical product development is increasingly using smart phones as a base component in medical device design. Medgadget  has a story this morning about Biomeme  , a company that is working to launch a small, portable system that uses a smart phone to perform real-time DNA analysis. If this actually comes to pass, this will be a game changer.

Incorporating smart phones as the base technology for medical products is still very new. Companies that invest in the design needed to do it right will be successful. Such devices are really creating a new product category. This is an opportunity for medical device designers to provide some fresh thinking about design and user experience.
